This lovely Bruge, Belgium private house was cramped and dark before the design team at 51N4E brought it into the realms of modern architecture.
There’s a flash of brilliance in the way they integrated old and new in the kitchen and bedrooms. The contemporary interior is light and streamlined, but the designers judiciously left exposed wood beams, old stair risers and other rustic touches remain in place to contrast with the gleaming, clean lines of the white kitchen table and black entertainment center. Odd doors with cut-off corners and exuberant old tile floors in a rainbow of colors were retained for their sweetness and sense of history.
The Vault Room House has sleek curves of wood that stand out beautifully against the distressed brick of the façade, and the off-center door echoes another unusually positioned door in the interior.
